BlackTangra Open-Book Simulator
Learn to run a business by running one.
A gamified financial simulation where teams allocate capital, deliver under time pressure, and keep customers satisfied — then unpack every decision with frameworks that turn the numbers into instinct.
About the Simulator
The BlackTangra Open-Book Simulator is designed for employees at every level of an organization. Through interactive, scenario-based learning, participants experience how everyday operational decisions influence financial performance, cash flow, customer value, and long-term organizational stewardship. Rather than teaching accounting, the simulator develops business understanding — helping individuals recognize how their work contributes to sustainable performance and responsible stewardship of organizational resources.
What to expect
Practice with real financial decisions and real consequences.
Each cycle of the simulation compresses a business quarter into minutes. Teams allocate capital, build and deliver their product or service, and manage the customer relationship — all against the clock.
01
Play the cycle
Time-pressured rounds force fast, consequential calls on spend, staffing, and delivery — the same trade-offs a real operator faces.
02
See it land
Every decision shows up downstream — in the cash position, the balance sheet, and whether the customer stays satisfied.
03
Reflect and improve
Simple, relevant frameworks guide the debrief, helping teams make sense of what happened and change how they work next round.
What is taught
Three modules, one ascent.
The curriculum runs from first principles to daily-decision fluency, then out into personal finance — each module building on the last.
Value Upstream
The foundation module: discover how to run a sustainably profitable business, and how to interpret what your financial statements are actually telling you.
Financial Literacy Mountain
Two-stage climb · in-person or virtualThe fundamentals
Available in-person or virtual
Teams work through the realities of starting a business — borrowing capital, repaying loans, and monitoring cash flow — while building a working grasp of the income statement, cash flow statement, and balance sheet.
Connecting the decisions
Builds directly on Basecamp
A deeper look at how daily business decisions move the balance sheet, and how those movements ripple into the income statement and cash flow. Participants learn to explain and apply intermediate accounting concepts, including:
Ontology of Personal & Business Finance
A guided map of the tools and applications people actually use to manage personal and business money — kept current with what's leading-edge, and paced to how hard you want to hustle.
Where the first two modules teach the underlying mechanics, this one connects them to the apps and habits participants use every day.
